David noticed: AI slop is identifiable by its contrastive sentence rhythm
David articulated a precise definition of AI-generated copy he refused to publish, identifying the contrastive 'not X, it's Y' pattern as the telltale structure.
While reviewing copy for the granular.work/firms page, David pushed back on a draft that felt AI-generated:
even this has AI smell. let me explain what ai slop is: its the whole "It's not X, it's Y" "This does this. That does that. BUT THIS does this and this is why its awesome" this type of pattern of writing is ai slop.
He applied this to a specific draft — "A CV is what they wrote about themselves. A LinkedIn is what they wanted you to see. A transcript is what they did under exam conditions. None of those are how they think when they're working. Granular is — because the AI was already in the room" — which he noted also carried the contrastive rhythm even if it was more subtle. He used this definition to direct six agents to go and research literature on what non-AI copy patterns actually look like.
